Young Athlete Suffers Devastating Head Injury

POSTED: 11:43 pm EDT October 20, 2007
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A young girl, who was no more than 8 years old, was practicing at the Bithlo Motorsports Park in Orange County, Saturday morning, when the bike got away from her. Eyewitnesses told us that when the motorcross bike flipped, it crushed the girl’s helmet and skull. She was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital with extremely serious injuries. No one would confirm whether she survived her surgery.

“She was just a little bitty girl. Teeny tiny,” said Susan Hoffman, Manager of Bithlo Motorsports Park.

Eyewitnesses said the girl’s name is Haley. The park manager said Haley is seven years old. Children as young as four years old can participate in park activities.

Stephanie Henderson said her daughter Ramsey was six when she began participating in the sport. The Henderson’s showed Eyewitness news the standard protection young riders wear.

“(They wear) Chest protection and a neck brace that protects the spine and your collar bone and neck. Then, of course, the helmet and the safety goggles and the boots,” said Stephanie Henderson, parent.

Henderson said she believes all sports come with risk and said Saturday’s accident won’t change the way she feels about motorcross racing or her daughter’s safety.

“You just have a lot of faith that God will take care of her,” said Henderson.
